Dr Wayne Robert Earl Laing

15/04/1943 – 29/09/2022

Wayne graduated BDS from the University of Otago in 1966. He was a founding member of the New Zealand Society of Forensic Odontology (NZSFO), a former President and Executive Committee member, a hardworking and long-serving member of the Credentialing Committee and an Honorary Life member of the Society. He was an outspoken and fearless advocate for just causes. He was an active member of the Waikato/Bay of Plenty forensic group for 34 years until his retirement in 2018 and was deployed to Thailand for Operation Phuket in 2005 and to Christchurch for Operation Earthquake 2011. He had a refreshingly forthright no-nonsense approach to life and could be relied upon to speak honestly on the many subjects he considered important.

Wayne was also a Fellow of the Faculty of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (Forensic Odontology section) of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, a Fellow of the New Zealand Society of Pathologists, an NZDA Council Representative (1985-87) and an honorary life member of the Waikato Branch of that Association. He was a prominent figure in the New Zealand Society for Anaesthesia and Sedation in Dentistry Inc., especially in the 1970s and 1980s.

Wayne was instrumental in designing the logos for both the NZSFO and the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Branch of the NZDA.

A very keen golfer and loyal friend to many, Wayne passed peacefully at Rhoda Read Continuing Care in Morrinsville on 29th of September 2022.

Wayne is survived by his loving wife Judy, his sons Brendan (and wife Joanna), Garrick (and wife Julia) and his four grandchildren Amy, Nathan, Moxon and Bruno. He will be very much missed by his family, friends and colleagues.

Rest in peace Wayne.
